Welsh for Adults Courses

Your chance to experience a whole new language and culture in an entirely unique environment…

Nant Gwrtheyrn is situated in an old granite-quarrying village on the Lly^n Peninsula, where more than 70% of the population speak Welsh as their first language. Since 1982 the Centre has specialised in intensive residential Welsh forAdults courses of the highest standard. Over 25,000 people have taken advantage of the Nant’s resources and highly experienced staff in their attempt to learn one of Europe’s oldest languages and we now offer an even wider variety of intensive residential Welsh for Adults courses as well as residential Welsh in the Workplace courses that are tailor-made for different organisations.

You can choose one of two options when studying at Nant Gwrtheyrn - full board or daily attendance. All meals are served at Caffi Meinir Restaurant on site. Accommodation is provided in our former quarrymen’s cottages. Classes are held in the Plas which used to be the Quarry Manager’s home. The Heritage Centre, Caffi Meinir Restaurant and lower level of the Plas are all accessible by wheelchair. Until the completion of the development wheelchair access to the cottages is difficult.

What type of courses does Nant Gwrtheyrn offer?

Our Welsh for Adults Courses are available at eight levels, which are; Pre-entry, Entry Part 1, Entry Part 2, Foundation, Intermediate, Higher, Higher 2 and Proficiency.

Successful and informal language teaching methods are used, which are unique to Nant Gwrtheyrn but, at the same time, complement other ways of learning the language e.g. the WJEC course, Wlpan etc. Our courses are supplementary to other course providers’ and provide an excellent chance to practice, revise and build your confidence.

The courses give people the opportunity to practice each language skill – speaking, reading, listening and writing – but particular emphasis is placed ond building your confidence to speak the language by encouraging you to practice your Welsh as much as possible during your stay at the Nant.

Our experienced tutors adjust the course content slightly in accordance with group needs. You will never be in a class of more than 15 people so you’re sure to get plenty of personal encouragement and attention. Because people come to us from all over Wales and beyond the language spoken in North and South Wales is studied as well as any colloquial differences.

You will be following intensive lessons in the morning and afternoon; time is allocated for personal study and Welsh language activities and entertainment which support and build on the work done are arranged for some evenings. One afternoon is devoted to less structured activities providing opportunities to practice your Welsh in real situations outside the classroom and, of course, you’ll have plenty of time to socialise, relax and practise with your fellow learners.

The following pages list all our language course dates in 2009 along with an outline of each course’s objectives and language functions. It is an outline of what we hope to achieve during the course – it’s important to realise that each course can be slightly different owing to differing individuals’ needs from course to course.

Having completed a course at Nant Gwrtheyrn it’s important for you to carry on with your studies in order to develop your language skills. We are very happy to offer an informal tutorial at the end of each course where we can suggest which steps are suitable for you to take next as an individual.
