Learning Welsh from a distance, literally!

Nant Gwrtheyrn > News > Learning Welsh from a distance, literally!

Getting into Welsh via distance-learning is a term that has become all the more familiar in 2020 as virtual online courses have taken over from the more traditional classroom learning method. One of the main advantages of being able to learn from a distance is that Nant Gwrtheyrn courses are now accessible to anyone, from anywhere in the world.

Richard Llewellyn is certainly learning from a distance…from his home in Perth, Australia. Richard is originally from Merthyr Tydfil. He emigrated to New Zealand 30 years ago, and 6 years later settled in Perth where he now works as nurse.

Richard tells us his story: “I’m from Wales originally but, like my parents’ generation, I didn’t learn Welsh, although the generations above and below in our family were andare fluent.

“Every time I visit home, I wish I understood Welsh and I finally decided to do something about it. As you can imagine, there aren’t many Welsh learning opportunities or many people to practice with in Western Australia but then came Covid and opportunities opened up online.

“I enjoyed my online course at Nant Gwrtheyrn and I’ve already signed up for another one. Mathew is such a good tutor. He created an encouraging and supportive environment but stuck to the course structure.. I particularly liked the humour and skill with which Matthew held everything together during his teaching. He clearly knows his craft.

“The reason for the existence of Nant Gwrtheyrn is to teach Welsh. It’s there for one reason and that’s what it excels at and that’s why I would recommend it. When Covid has run its course, I look forward to visiting Nant Gwrtheyrn.”

You can learn Welsh like Richard with Wales’ most iconic language centre from wherever you are in the world.  Nant Gwrtheyrn has a choice of virtual intense courses for all levels. For more information visit: https://nantgwrtheyrn.org/languagecourses/
