Nant Gwrtheyrn Nature Trail App Shortlisted for Prestigious National Tech Awards
A pioneering digital project developed for Nant Gwrtheyrn has been shortlisted for two major technology awards, recognising innovation, sustainability, and resilience in digital design.
The Nant Gwrtheyrn Nature Trail App, created by Tinkr Creative, has been named a finalist in the following categories:
- Digital Project of the Year
- Digital Resilience Initiative of the Year
Now in their tenth year, the awards are among the most competitive in the technology sector. Being shortlisted alongside major industry players marks a significant achievement for a small organisation.
A Different Approach to Digital Infrastructure
Most modern apps and websites depend on rented infrastructure from large providers such as Amazon Web Services or Google Cloud — often costing organisations hundreds or thousands of pounds annually, with costs rising as usage increases.
Tinkr Creative took a fundamentally different approach.
Instead of relying on third-party platforms, a bespoke server infrastructure was engineered using professional-grade open-source technologies — similar to those used by large organisations worldwide, but independently configured and managed.
The result is a highly robust platform that runs for less than £10 per month, while delivering the same level of performance and reliability as systems used by well-funded technology companies. Crucially, these costs remain low regardless of how many people use the app.
Built for a remote location
Located at the end of a steep road on the Llŷn Peninsula, Nant Gwrtheyrn is considered a somewhat remote area with limited mobile connectivity.
The Nature Trail App was designed specifically with this in mind.
The app operates on a local-first model, meaning that when a visitor first opens it, all trail content, including text, images, audio narration, and Welsh-to-English translations is downloaded directly to their device. From that point on, the app works entirely offline, with updates syncing automatically whenever a connection becomes available.
As visitors explore the trail, GPS technology unlocks points of interest in real time, creating an interactive experience.
Supporting Welsh Language Learning
A key feature of the app is its focus on accessibility and language learning.
Welsh text throughout the trail is fully interactive, allowing users to tap individual words for translations. The app intelligently handles Welsh grammatical mutations, providing a smoother and more intuitive learning experience.
Each trail becomes not only a journey through the landscape, but also a gentle introduction to the Welsh language.
Accessibility has also been central to the project, with components carefully selected to ensure strong compatibility with screen readers and assistive technologies.
Empowering Staff Through Custom Technology
Content for the app is managed through a bespoke admin system, giving Nant Gwrtheyrn staff full control over trails, points of interest, images, audio, and bilingual vocabulary without requiring developer input.
This ensures the app can evolve organically over time, remaining dynamic and responsive to the needs of visitors.
Behind the scenes, a modern synchronisation system keeps content updated seamlessly across devices, while the entire platform runs on independently managed infrastructure hosted in Europe, ensuring data sovereignty and long-term operational independence.
A Milestone Achievement
While the competition includes some of the largest technology companies in the world, being shortlisted represents a major milestone for Nant Gwrtheyrn and Tinkr Creative.
With a record number of entries submitted for this year’s awards, the recognition highlights not only technical excellence, but also the value of innovative, sustainable solutions developed outside the traditional tech industry.
