Why learning Welsh is important

I Moved to Ceidio in Pen Llŷn five years ago. I’m originally from Yorkshire.

Before we moved, I used to come on holidays to the area and would hear the language being spoken. I always felt that I wanted to learn and speak Welsh. So, once I retired, and had the time, I started to learn.

I’ve learnt in many ways – attended courses at Nant Gwrtheyrn, a weekly class with Dysgwyr Dwyfor and I’ve used Say Something in Welsh.

Before Covid, I spoke Welsh with my friends, neighbours and volunteered at the Maritime Museum in Nefyn. I also sang with a Welsh choir at the golf club. It’s more of a challenge to practice at the moment, but I do still speak and practice at the shops and I’ve continued to work weekly online.

I’d encourage anyone who lives in the area to learn. It’s brilliant to be able to speak to people and a great way of meeting new people. Learning Welsh was important to me, and I’m going to keep on going so that I can hopefully, one day, speak like a native!
